As Traditional Marriage Weaken, Former Proponent of Marriage Change View and Turn to Alternatives

Isabel Sawhill, a former Clinton administration official and longtime proponent of marriage, changed her view on marriage and proposed a new form of relationship, in her recently published book. Sawhill, who works for the Brookings Institution, argues that the rate of marriage, especially among the poor, is falling and it is time to consider Scandinavian type of civil partnership as an alternative.

According to Sawhill, “marriage is disappearing,” and we need to face the reality and cope with evolved forms of the institution.
