A window of opportunity opened in 2018 when the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) doubled the lifetime gift, estate and generation-skipping tax exemptions to $11.18 million from $5.6 million. Adjusting for inflation, the current exemption this year is $11.58 million — the highest it has ever been…..

This increase in the estate tax exemption is set to sunset at the end of 2025, meaning the exemption will likely drop back to what it was prior to 2018. Additionally, the upcoming U.S. presidential election could accelerate the rollback as the challenger candidate has proposed significant changes, increasing taxes for the wealthy.
